This 28" x 28" painting by internationally acclaimed artist Addonis Parker pays tribute to the legendary entertainer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker. Born in 1906—the same year Black Wall Street was founded in the Greenwood district of Tulsa, Oklahoma—Baker became the first Black woman to achieve global fame as an entertainer.
Beyond her groundbreaking career in the arts, Baker’s legacy includes her work as a wartime hero, spy, and civil rights activist for Black Americans. She was the only official female speaker at the March on Washington, standing alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In 1951, Baker was offered $10,000 to perform at the Copa City Club in Miami Beach, but she refused to appear before segregated audiences. When the venue ultimately met her demands, her insistence on integrated audiences helped pave the way for the desegregation of live entertainment venues in Miami, Las Vegas, and cities across the United States.
